LP Gas
What LP Gas is sold in NSW & QLD?
Only propane is sold in NSW & QLD. We do not sell any blend or Automix. All
our forklift cylinders are filled with Propane only.
What is LP Gas?
LP Gas stands for liquefied petroleum gas which describes propane
and butane gases. When stored under pressure, they become a liquid
and take up much less space, making LP Gas easy to transport.
Why does LP Gas smell?
As a safety feature, a strong, distinctive odour is deliberately
added to LP gas for the detection of even minor leaks.
How does leaked LP Gas dissipate?
Because LP Gas is heavier than air, any leaked gas will always flow
downwards, collect in low spaces and be slow to dissipate without
ample ventilation and air movement.
Is LP Gas toxic?
All LP Gas is absolutely non-toxic, non-corrosive, clean burning
and non-polluting. But if inhaled in sufficient volumes it can cause
suffocation.
Is LP Gas used to fuel motor vehicles?
Yes, LP Gas is used to fuel motor vehicles, however usually a combination
of propane and butane (also known as blend or Autogas) is used.
It's different to heating gas and BBQ gas, which is straight propane.
Can I use propane in my car?
Yes, you can use propane in your car, however most places don't sell
straight propane because it's sometimes slightly more expensive than
blend (propane/butane mix). It's thought that straight propane is
better for your car (in both environmental and in performance terms)
and our Somerton branch on Hume Highway happens to sell straight
Propane so next time you're going past - pull in, fill up and you
be the judge.
What is the mix in Autogas or blend?
The mix in Autogas or blend is a combination of propane and butane
normally around 50/50. Blend is commonly used for forklifts and motor
vehicles. The exact percentage varies all the time and is available
on request. Phone our Dandenong Branch on (30) 9706 6262 to find
out more.
How long should a forklift cylinder last?
Approximately 6-10 hours of operational use depending on the size
of the forklift motor and depending on other variables.
How do I get my industrial/LP Gas forklift cylinder changed over
for another full one?
If you currently have a Supagas cylinder and account, simply call
your local Supagas location and they will come and change it over
for you, next day guaranteed and often on the same day in most areas.
What are some basic safety rules?
- Ensure that fixed LP Gas installations are carried out and serviced
by a licensed or authorized gas fitter. This includes work in premises,
on caravans and boats.
- Keep LP Gas appliances and fittings in good condition. Make sure
they are checked regularly for any deterioration, including corrosion
or minor leaks.
- Use only equipment and parts specifically manufactured and approved
for LP Gas.
- Use the correct type of hose. Do not make up temporary connections.
- Keep cylinders secure and upright during transport.
- Shut off cylinder valve before disconnecting cylinder from the
appliance. Conversely when replacing an empty cylinder make sure
the appliance isolation cocks are turned off.
- Always store LPG cylinders upright outdoors in a well ventilated
position
BBQ LP Gas
Is LP Gas the gas used in BBQ's?
Yes, it's straight propane. It is also used in heaters, water heating
systems, cookers and other applications.
What can I do if my BBQ cylinder is out of date (more than
10 years old)?
Government regulation requires BBQ cylinders to be tested every 10
years. Supagas can have your cylinder re-tested so it's good for
another 10 years. Just drop in and see us or call your local branch
for pricing and other details.
How can you tell how much gas is left in an LP Gas cylinder if
there is no gauge?
There is no perfect way to tell but for a general idea, just pour
a cup of warm/hot water on the side of the cylinder and because LP
Gas is so cold, a condensation line forms and you will be able to
clearly see the level of liquid.
How can I tell if my cylinder is leaking?
You can spray the fittings on the top of a cylinder with a bottle
of soapy water when the line is pressurised. If your cylinder is
leaking the gas will create bubbles in the soapy water. If this is
the case you must turn off the gas supply and contact your gas supplier.
Do I need a regulator for my 9kg BBQ cylinder (or 45kg LP Gas
cylinder)?
Yes, every BBQ should have one as regulators control the pressure
of the gas available to the BBQ and allows it to come through at
a usable flow rate. The control knobs are only used to adjust the
actual volume of the gas to the burners.
How do I get my BBQ gas bottle filled?
Come into one of our convenient Supagas locations and we can
fill it for you and because we fill from high-pressure tanks it takes
only a quarter of the time it does at a service station.
Do we supply Natural Gas in cylinders?
No, we don't supply Natural Gas at all.
What is the difference between LP Gas and Natural Gas?
They are similar in terms of usage, but natural gas cannot be stored
and transported as a liquid and therefore is not widely available.
Can I use LP Gas in natural gas appliances or vice-versa?
No, each type of gas requires different amounts of oxygen to burn
properly, so different burners are needed in the appliances. All
gas installations and conversions must be carried out by a licensed
gas fitter.
HEATERS
How long will a 45kg last on my heater?
The following are just approximations:
3 Burner Stand Heater = 80 Hours
5 Burner Stand Heater = 60 Hours
Small Blow Heater (J25) = 23 Hours
Medium Blow Heater (J33) = 18 Hours
Large Blow Heater (J50) = 12 Hours
Patio Heater (Note: on 9kg) = 9 Hours
If I'm having a party, can I hire a heater for $29 per week like advertised?
No, the $29 per week applies to a minimum of 4 weeks rental, weekend
prices are available on request.
HELIUM
How many balloons do I get out of a helium cylinder?
9.1m3 = Approx 800
3.5m3 = Approx 300
1.2m3 = Approx 100
0.6m3 = Approx 50
Do I require a regulator for helium?
To dispense helium into balloons you will require a regulator, see
the helium page for more details.
ACCOUNTS
How do I open an account with Supagas?
You can either drop in or call Supagas and they can mail out or fax
you a Credit application form. Just fill in the details and we can
start delivering to you for free.
Do I require an account to purchase things from Supagas?
To hire industrial, LP Gas and some hospitality gases we will be
required to open an account. However, for weekend heater hire and
weekend helium hire, an account isn't necessary.
OTHER
What type of signage should I have on the gate with different
gases on site?
It depends on exactly which gas you have on your site, for LP Gas
you will require a metal 2WE sign. Phone 13 78 72 to find out more
info.
What is MAPP Gas and do we have it?
No, we don't have MAPP Gas, which is an all-purpose industrial fuel
having the high-flame temperature of acetylene but has the handling
characteristics of propane. It's basically a mixture of oxygen and
LPG which is used slower than the two gases separated therefore less
usage of the gases occurs.
